A procedure in which eggs are obtained from a woman's ovary and combined with sperm outside the body to create embryos. The embryos are grown in the laboratory for several days and then either placed in a woman's uterus or cryopreserved (frozen) for future use. Also called IVF.

Although most women should seek treatment after 12 months without success, the timeline is shortened to six months for some groups, includind women over the age of 35 or those who have unique health issues like polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), uterine fibroids, or a history of irregular periods.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is infertility?

It is the inability to conceive after one year of unprotected intercourse in women under 35 years of age and after 6 months in women older than 35 years. This term is also associated with the inability to carry a pregnancy to full term. A "fertility evaluation" is recommended in all these cases.

What are the main causes of infertility?

There are a wide number of reasons that can cause infertility. About one-third of the cases are attributed to male factors, another third to female factors, and the remainder to a combination of both or an unknown cause.

How common is infertility?

The potential number of IVF cycles needed in the United States to satisfy the requirements of the American Population is approximately 2.8 million cycles.

Currently we are doing around 300k.

Therefore for 10 women that need IVF only 1 is getting it. We are not fulfilling 90% of the IVF needs in the USA and affordability is a main bottleneck.

How is infertility diagnosed?

After a consultation and a pelvic ultrasound, we can direct ourselves towards the origin of the infertility. Subsequently, through additional testing, possible diagnosis are confirmed or ruled out. Basic tests include the evaluation of the quality of the eggs, the function of the fallopian tubes and the quality of the sperm. This is usually the first step in a reproductive assessment.

What increases the risk of infertility in a man?

Sperm function can be affected by a man's general health and lifestyle. Some factors can reduce the quality and number of sperm:

  • Smoking
  • Alcohol abuse
  • Consumption of drugs
  • Age
  • Environmental toxins (including pesticides and lead)
  • Conditions such as mumps, kidney disease, and hormonal problems
  • Medicines
  • Radiation and/or chemotherapy treatments for cancer

What increases the risk of infertility in a woman?

Multiple variables can alter a woman's ability to conceive, these include:

  • Age
  • Smoking
  • Alcohol abuse
  • Stres
  • Unhealthy diet
  • Intense athletic training
  • Overweight / Obesity
  • Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)
  • Conditions that generate hormonal changes such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and primary ovarian insufficiency

Can infertility be avoided or prevented?

In general, it is recommended to avoid the causes that cause infertility; for example, maintaining a healthy weight, not using drugs, alcohol and/or cigarettes, as well as having a balanced and healthy diet. However, it cannot be guaranteed that this would be enough to prevent fertility problems in the future.

Is age a determining factor in female infertility?

Age is one of the most important factors that affects the ability to conceive. A woman is born with all her eggs (about 1 million). At puberty she has about 300,000 and these gradually decrease until she reaches menopause. In parallel, the quality of the eggs also decreases, affecting her ability to have a pregnancy and carry it to full term.

From the age of 30, female fertility begins to gradually decline. This reaches a higher rate of decline around the age of 35 and from the age of 45, the possibility of spontaneous pregnancy is very low.
